Games With Great Character Customization
Cyberpunk 2077
Release Date: December 2020Platform: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series S | XDeveloper: CD Projekt RedMultiplayer: YesDownload / Upload Character Designs: Yes
Cyberpunk 2077may have stumbled right out of the gate, but the game’s only gotten better with its 2.0 update and the launch of thePhantom Libertyexpansion. Even from the start, though, CD Projekt Red’s sci-fi RPG was lauded for its excellent character creator.

Players can choose to go through the game as male or female V, and the options you get to fiddle with in the character creator really help to personalize the experience. From the hair options to body builds, you also get to go really granular with their cyberware aesthetics, and yes, even the kinds of genitals they have. Talk about next-level immersion.
Baldur’s Gate 3
Release Date: August 2023Platform: PC, PS5, Xbox Series S | XDeveloper: Larian StudiosMultiplayer: YesDownload / Upload Character Designs: Yes
Similarly,Baldur’s Gate 3also offers an incredibly robust character creation system. Once you’ve chosen your desired class, it’s time to decide on your race and appearance. The possibilities feel endless in this one, with the player base and community coming up with tons of creative character builds from spending countless hours in the character creator alone.

What if you are stuck and out of creative ideas? No worries, you can just click on the Randomize option and the game will shuffle all of its sliders for you, spawning a wholly unique character for your next playthrough.
Release Date: September 2023Platform: PC, Xbox Series S | XDeveloper: Bethesda Game StudiosMultiplayer: NoDownload / Upload Character Designs: Yes (with console commands)

Bethesda games have always been known for their in-depth character creation systems, butStarfieldtakes things to a whole new level. The fact that every single NPC in that game was created using the in-game character creator says a lot. There are a ludicrous number of options and sliders to fiddle around with, and you can basically spawn any character you can think of.
You could even create Todd Howard himself if you wanted, and just coast through space as Bethesda’s head honcho. For an RPG that’s all about player decisions and agency, it was incredibly important that Starfield be able to let you create a character that’s truly your own. And on that front, it succeeds.

Jump Force
Release Date: February 2019Platform: PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox OneDeveloper: Spike ChunsoftMultiplayer: YesDownload / Upload Character Designs: No
Have you ever wanted to create your very own anime hero/heroine? Well, Jump Force is the game for you. The game’s character creator gives you a ton of different options, like hair or eye styles inspired by its various anime.

Customization gets pretty detailed, letting you choose from a bunch of different voices, mouths, eyes, and more. Things get even more fun, however, with the different costumes and accessories you can purchase. Want to put on a Naruto jumpsuit with Ichigo’s sword, a Vegeta wig, and some slick pants from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure?
You can do that. There are so many options, that any anime fan should have a great time making their own character.
Black Desert Online
Release Date: March 2016Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox OneDeveloper: Pearl AbyssMultiplayer: YesDownload / Upload Character Designs: Yes
Not only does Black Desert Online feature fantastic graphics, but it provides some of the most robust character creation options on the planet, which are made doubly impressive since each character class has its own model and customization options.
Unlike most character creation systems, Black Desert Online lets players change hair length, body shape, and a whole slew of other body parts that, outside of games such as The Sims 4 (see below), you rarely see in an average MMORPG.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse/Xenoverse 2
Release Date: February 2015, October 2016Platform: PC, PS4, PS3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X | SDeveloper: DimpsMultiplayer: YesDownload / Upload Character Designs: Yes (on PC via mods)
Dragon Ball Xenoverse and Xenoverse 2’s character creation system might feel quite limited compared to other games, but it wins points in our ranking for how specific it is in letting you create your very own Dragon Ball characters.
Unfortunately, you may’t go ahead and create your very own face, since the character creation system restricts players to pre-made templates. But you can still mix and match all of the faces, hairstyles, body sizes, color options, and voices that are in Xenoverse to create a unique monstrosity or a good-looking fighter.
Plus, more than a few character options reference other Dragon Ball characters, so even if your favorite is missing from the game, you can still add them in.
Phantasy Star Online 2
Release Date: July 2012Platform: PC, PS4, PS Vita, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X | SDeveloper: Sega Division 3Multiplayer: YesDownload / Upload Character Designs: Yes
After a painful eight-year wait for Phantasy Star Online 2 to be released worldwide, eager adventurers finally got their chance when it arrived on Western shores in 2020. Despite this, many players were able to jump in earlier to start creating their characters, thanks to an unofficial English patch.
Phantasy Star Online 2 gives players the ability to customize their character’s face and body, and none of the sliders break the anime aesthetic or make characters look out of place. Even when they radically change a character’s body shape, the end product looks as though it belongs in the world.
Despite a few restrictions here and there, especially compared to other MMORPGs, Phantasy Star Online 2 still allows you plenty of options to let your creativity run free.
Dragon’s Dogma
Release Date: May 2012Platform: PC, PS4, PS3, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox 360Developer: CapcomMultiplayer: Yes (sort of)Download / Upload Character Designs: No
Like many other games, Dragon’s Dogma’s character creation system relies on a combination of sliders and pre-made assets.
The torso, arm, leg shapes, and every aspect of the face are controlled via a mix-and-match system, while general changes such as height and weight are dependent on sliders. Do you want to craft a heroic juggernaut, turning heads on the battlefield with your stunning visage? Or curse the world with some hideous mistake that only a mother could love?
Personally, I just want whatever is most likely to seduce Feste the court jester. Don’t judge me for my personal preference.
Release Date: November 2015Platform: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series S | XDeveloper: Bethesda Game StudiosMultiplayer: NoDownload / Upload Character Designs: Yes (via mods)
Regardless of your stance on how it compares to the other entries in the Fallout franchise, you can’t claim deny thatFallout 4has one of the best character creation systems of any Fallout game, if not any Bethesda game.
Players can essentially sculpt their character’s face as if it were made from clay. Now that Starfield is out, this game and its creation suite are unfortunately moving further into the rearview mirror. It’s still worth returning to, however, to see just how far your imagination (and by extension, your character’s mug) can be stretched.
The character creator in Fallout 4 was so unique and well-made that it even began to be part of memes, with players creating very specific characters from real life and pop culture. It is all in the past indeed, but we’ll never forget.
Final Fantasy XV: Comrades
Release Date: November 2017Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox OneDeveloper: Square Enix Business Division 2Multiplayer: YesDownload / Upload Character Designs: No
Final Fantasy XV wowed a lot of fans when it was released, and Square Enix released the free multiplayer-oriented Final Fantasy XV: Comrades DLC for good measure, which also later became a standalone game.
Like any solid multiplayer mode, Comrades comes with a character creator that provides a variety of sliders and preset face and body options for players to create plenty of charming heroes. Plus, players can select and customize clothing and hair with plenty of color options, including highlights. Get your hair done, sis.
Despite the options, they all feel very much at home in the colorful world of Final Fantasy. We can definitely appreciate the effort that Square Enix put in.
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Release Date: November 2014Platform: PC, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360Developer: BiowareMultiplayer: YesDownload / Upload Character Designs: Yes (via mods)
Dragon Age: Inquisition sports a bevy of character creation options that allow players to create any number of unique faces. While you always start from a pre-made face, you have the freedom to adjust and customize most face parts by using the sliders.
For a game from 2014, players have a huge amount of freedom to create almost whatever Human, Elf, Dwarf, or Qunari they can imagine. And yes, each race comes with its own options, so you don’t have to worry about a human sporting a better beard than a dwarf.
EVE Online
Release Date: May 2003Platform: PCDeveloper: CCP GamesMultiplayer: YesDownload / Upload Character Designs: Yes
You wouldn’t think an MMO focused on spaceships, commerce, and conquest would feature a character creator system (at least, until Starfield became a thing), but the developers at CCP go that extra mile.
And then they go five more miles to give players a ton of ethnicity choices, each with distinct sets of options that can be tweaked by using a system not unlike the one featured in Black Desert Online.
Granted, players can’t create sins against nature quite like they can in Black Desert Online, but EVE Online’s character creation system lets players tweak their character’s face and body however they like, then pick from several expressive clothes and accessories.
Final Fantasy XIV
Release Date: August 2013Platform: PC, PS5, PS4, PS3, Xbox Series X | SDeveloper: Square Enix Business Division 5Multiplayer: YesDownload / Upload Character Designs: Yes
While the character creation in Final Fantasy XIV certainly isn’t as robust as Black Desert’s, the game still offers players a ton of options for creating an avatar that’s unique to them.
There aren’t many games we can think of where you can modify the iris size of your character, the eyebrows, and even the lip color. Did you ever dream of sporting blue lips? Well, dream no more, because FFXIV lets you make that a reality.
There are tons of hairstyles to choose from when you first get started, along with two different variants for each of the races available in the game. You can be a plainsfolk Lalafell or a dunesfolk.
There are highlander Hyurs and midlander Hyurs. But then again, who wants to be a random Hyur? Especially now that we have Viera and Hrothgar?
The Sims 4
Release Date: September 2014Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox OneDeveloper: MaxisMultiplayer: NoDownload / Upload Character Designs: Yes
The Sims series did not start with many options. In the original, you had a few faces to select from, limited clothing and that was it. 14 years later, The Sims 4 expands greatly on that, even presenting different body types (finally!).
But, if you want to go crazy with your Sims, then you need to playThe Sims 4 with mods. That’s where you can truly get creative and make use of a lot of cool options for your characters. But even the vanilla version of the game is pretty damn good.
The Sims 4 is a playground for you to create your favorite characters, be it from your personal life or those from your favorite franchises.
We couldn’t possibly have made this list without The Sims 4 featuring somewhere.
Monster Hunter: World
Release Date: August 2018Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox OneDeveloper: CapcomMultiplayer: YesDownload / Upload Character Designs: Yes (with mods)
Monster Hunter: Worlddoesn’t have endless options when it comes to character customization, but it’s one of the prettiest creators we’ve seen in this generation. Both male and female characters have access to some great hairstyles, along with a decent selection of facial features and other distinguishing marks.
The best element of World’s character creator is how your character looks in the creator is how they will look within the game world itself. We’ve been burned too many times by games that let us create a deceptively cool-looking character, and then watch them stumble around like a potato when the game actually starts.
This doesn’t happen in World, and we’re curious to see what Capcom has in store for us with the character creation in Monster Hunter Wilds.
Pillars of Eternity
Release Date: March 2015Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo SwitchDeveloper: Obsidian EntertainmentMultiplayer: NoDownload / Upload Character Designs: Yes
Compared to other offerings on this list, Pillars of Eternity offers slightly fewer customization options when it comes to your character’s looks. Still, not only you are free to edit a lot of basic stuff like hairstyles, color, race, and body shape, but it’s also very easy to save your character’s looks and download a character made by another player.
Also, the creation tool is easy to use, so you can create your very own Dungeons & Dragons hero in just a few clicks. Not as varied as others, but very solid.
Bloodborne
Release Date: March 2015Platform: PS4Developer: FromSoftwareMultiplayer: YesDownload / Upload Character Designs: No
FromSoftware’s Soulsborne games have never really been known for their character creation systems. We all remember the original Dark Souls, which has so few hairstyles to choose from and is tough to make any character look even remotely human. But hey, maybe that was the point.
By the time Bloodborne came around, things changed. Thanks to its quite well-made character-creation system. Now, you may go ahead and create your very own complete abomination, or just a normal-looking human being.
Otherwise, you can spend a few minutes and put in a bit of effort to recreate the Joker, Batman, Dracula, Harry Potter, or whatever else you put your mind to.
Release Date: from 2000 onwardsPlatform: PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, Nintendo SwitchDeveloper: Yuke’s, Visual ConceptsMultiplayer: YesDownload / Upload Character Designs: Yes (but not upload)
Any WWE game with the Create a Wrestler creation tool will provide you with hours of enjoyment when it comes to character creation. There are so many tools to choose from, including custom titles, logos, and accessories.
You are free to make whatever creation you can. It’s not a coincidence that so many Twitch streamers use the WWE2K series as a reference point to host their unique wrestling tournaments. There is complete freedom to create anything.
You can make your wrestlers look as silly or as badass as you want, which is perfect for players who want to immerse themselves in the wrestling world, or completely break that sense of immersion. Who’s to say Goku wouldn’t like to get between the ropes now and then and deliver a tombstone piledriver to Roman Reigns?
Saints Row
Release Date: October 2008, November 2011, August 2013Platform: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, Xbox 360, Nintendo SwitchDeveloper: VolitionMultiplayer: YesDownload / Upload Character Designs: Yes (only via save game editor)
The second, third, and fourth entries of the Saints Row series boast some of the best character customization options we’ve ever seen, and so does the latest reboot. While the in-game graphics themselves may not be super pretty, there’s still a lot to choose from when it comes to aesthetics and appearances.
Not only that but if you are after creating some real deformed character, it’s something you are free to do, which isn’t easy to find in other games in the genre.
You can attempt to recreate real-life personalities and celebrities, deck them out in whatever clothes you want, and pay close attention to the details like hair highlights, streaks, and even the way they gesture in-game.
Soulcalibur VI
Release Date: October 2018Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox OneDeveloper: Dimps, Bandai Namco StudiosMultiplayer: YesDownload / Upload Character Designs: Yes
Ever since SoulCalibur III, the series has had an exceptional character creator, andSoulCalibur VIis no exception. The game’s story mode lets you create your very own character to play as, and past that you can create a ton of different original characters or even edit the looks of SoulCalibur VI’s main cast.
There are plenty of options for different armor, headgear, accessories, patterns on your clothes, and more. Of course, you may also pick from a range of voice options, and change the pitch and tone. It’s a blast to hop into SoulCalibur VI’s character creator and see what famous characters/people you can create. Maybe you want to make Sephiroth, or try your hand at Hellboy? It’s your choice.
Attack on Titan 2
Release Date: March 2018Platform: PC, PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch, Xbox OneDeveloper: Omega ForceMultiplayer: YesDownload / Upload Character Designs: No
Attack on Titan 2’s main draw is the ability to create your Cadet and insert them into the game’s post-apocalyptic world. The in-game engine makes it feel like you’re actually in the anime, and being able to create your character and have them be an active part of the story is pretty awesome.
The character creator covers the basics of hairstyles and colors, along with some nice sliders for body type options. Plus, it has some unique facial expressions for your avatar. They probably won’t be a raging alcoholic like Dot Pyxis, but hopefully, they’ll command just as much respect.
City of Heroes/Villains
Release Date: April 2004Platform: PCDeveloper: Homecoming Servers, Cryptic Studios, Paragon StudiosMultiplayer: YesDownload / Upload Character Designs: No
City of Heroes/Villains was shut down before its time and took with it one of the greatest character creation systems ever devised.
Sure, the graphics look like they are at least twenty years old (and that is probably because they are). And sure, players were limited to only being able to slightly modify body shapes and picking pre-made faces, hairstyles, and costume parts. But the sheer number of options and combinations available were, for the time, jaw-dropping.
Less an MMO with a character creator and more one with a costume creator, City of Heroes/Villains let players create any kind of superhero or villain, from heroic psychic clowns to villainous ninja werewolves. We’d never seen so much freedom in creating your very own character before.
Champions Online
Release Date: September 2009Platform: PCDeveloper: Cryptic StudiosMultiplayer: YesDownload / Upload Character Designs: No
Champions Online is a superhero-themed MMO, and while it doesn’t have a high player count these days, it does feature one of the best video game character creation systems. At least it was back in the day. It truly allows players to come up with a unique superhero that is wholly theirs. Even if the visuals feel a little bit dated by today’s standards.
The physical appearance of the character is basic enough, but you also have the freedom to choose your costumes, which is obviously the most important part of creating a superhero.
The overall creation system allows you to tweak and modify almost any part of your superhero and, while you’re able to’t create some horrifying monsters like in The Sims 4 with mods, you’re free to do what you wanted within the limits of the creator.
Release Date: November 2008Platform: PCDeveloper: NCSoftMultiplayer: YesDownload / Upload Character Designs: No
Despite its age, Aion sets the standard for most character creation systems. It relies on the tried and true method of “alter preset faces and bodies with sliders,” and while Aion might not have as many sliders as other games, it has more preset options than you may shake a stick of +5 at.
This is another MMORPG that allows you to edit and modify almost any part of your character’s face and body. Sure, you’re restricted to sliders, but there is still a lot of freedom in what you can create by spending a few minutes in the character creation system.
Players can create more unique faces than they can in plenty of modern MMOs. Perhaps you recognize the street fighting enthusiast in the image above? (Spoiler: I think it’s Juri!)
Elden Ring
Release Date: February 2022Platform: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | SDeveloper: FromSoftwareMultiplayer: YesDownload / Upload Character Designs: Yes (limited via mods)
Like all of the Dark Souls games before it,Elden Ringis a goldmine when it comes to creating characters. Not only can you create some of the most terrifying atrocities known to man, changing skin tone, limb length, and eye width, but you can also create some badass characters to roleplay as.
On top of all this, the armor and weapons that can be picked up throughout Elden Ring add another layer of customization to proceedings. Depending on your build, you can pick up weapons and armor that look as goofy as your character or ones that reaffirm just how much of a truly awesome character your future Elden Lord is.
Release Date: January 2024Platform: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X | SDeveloper: Bandai Namco Studios, AkiraMultiplayer: YesDownload / Upload Character Designs: Yes (via mods)
The latest entry in the vaunted fighting series is a little different from other entries on this list. Strictly speaking, you can’t create a new character inTekken 8, per se (unless you include your chibi avatar as part of the Arcade Quest mode), but you can gussy up existing fighters to look like a completely different person.
Using the bespoke character customization tool, aspiring creatives can retool the Tekken roster down to their facial hair and eyebrow color. Cleverly, several of these pieces closely resemble kit items of famous gaming heroes, allowing stunningly accurate facsimiles to be cobbled together.
Everyone’s favorite survival horror himbo, Leon Kennedy, is a popular option. His iconic hairstyle and outfit fromResident Evil 4are there at your fingertips, after all. The amusing aspect, however, is that it’s up to you who should cosplay as the daring government agent.Hwoarangseems a solid option, though you could opt forDragunovif you prefer a more realistic depiction of how Leon should look after years of battling bioterrorism.
Dragon’s Dogma 2
Release Date: March 2024Platform: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X | SDeveloper: CapcomMultiplayer: NoDownload / Upload Character Designs: Yes (via character creation tool)
The first Dragon’s Dogma was one of the best character creation games ever, andDragon’s Dogma 2has topped it by a mile. Moreover, you can download itscharacter-making toolvia Steam for free.
